Our
journey takes us between Portugal & Spain
discovering the surprising cultural & architectural
differences between them while enjoying
a landscape of great diversity. Our journey
starts as it would have done for any old
world traveller leaving Lisbon - crossing
the River Tejo by ferry. We ride through
the Arrabidal Nature Reserve overlooking
the sandy coves & the intense blue
of the Atlantic. From Sétubal we
use a ferry once again to cross over to
Troia & we ride along a river estuary
of dunes & pine forests. A dramatic
change awaits us as we cross into the Alenteijo
region as we ride on small country roads
through a region of huge rolling wheat
fields studded with cork oaks & wild
olive. We explore the old fortress of Alcocer,
the intact roman temple of Évora,
wander through the quaint arab backstreets
of Moura or visit an intact medieval charcoal
works.
As we cross into Spain we ride into Andalucía
where a landscape of rugged forested hills & tiny
villages awaits us. Quiet roads lined with
bracken, chestnut & oak trees lead us
into the Aracena Nature Park where we have
the option of visiting the huge laberynthine
caves below Aracenas medieval castle. Finally
we ride out of the sierras and into Seville,
arguably one of Europes prettiest & most
romantic cities. We have time to explore
the magnificent cathedral, the old Jewish
quarter or to relax strolling along the palm
tree lined banks of the Guadalquivir river.
This is a challenging ride due to
the distances involved although the terrain
itself is not too arduous. The longest climbs
are on the first days ride as we leave Lisbon
on the only small backroads available to
us through the Arrabidal Nature Reserve.
After this the terrain is gently rolling
with occasional climbs not too steep. The
longest days ride is the last day to Seville
at 113km. on good quality roads with a major
proportion on flat or gradual downhill. Option
of a rest day by adding a day to the itinerary.

resorts to Sesimbra before crossing into

sandy coves. Thrilling downhill past a sixteenth
century convent to the port town of Sétubal.

striking parish church & medieval town
hall within the walls of a 14th.C. castle.
