This example
itin is based in Zahara de los Atunes however
we can run
this itinerary from Los Caños de Meca,
Vejer de la Frontera or Tarifa. Equally this
itin is available as a point to point itinerary
between
various towns
Day 1 Arrival. Group collection
from airport (see above). Transfer to Zahara
de los Atunes, Cádiz. Dinner in Hotel followed by a nocturnal
tour of local bars & beach bars.
Day 2 Mountain Biking on the edge of Europe
overlooking the African coastline in the Alcornocales
Nature Park. A short transfer takes us to Tarifa,
mainland
Europe's southernmost town. We start riding from a high pass overlooking
the straits of Gibraltar. Here we are as close to Africa as you can get,
just 7km away from Morocco's coastline and the Rif mountains shimmering in
the morning sun. Skirting the edge of the Alcornocales Natural Park and past
a huge windfarm, we take an easy track downhill towards the coast. The white
sand and blue sea contrast dramatically with the rugged hills around us.
We picnic in a forest clearing and then ride through rolling pastureland
and via a famous fighting bull breeding farm. We finish the ride at Torre
de la Peña on the beach. Transfer to Zahara.
Day 3 Horse riding on Trafalgar beach & Las
Breñas Nature park.
The group will be divided into a morning & afternoon session. We leave
the stables riding up to and over famous Cape Traflagar along the 'Playa
de las Almas' (The beach of Souls) so called since the battle of Trafalgar
washed its dead up on the shore here in 1806. The original ‘Pirates’ watchtower
partially still stands while the newer lighthouse is one of the last manned
light houses in Spain. We ride over the golden sandy dunes of the beaches
around the cape and up into the 'Las Breñas' Nature Park, a 5,000ha.
protected forest of mediterranean pines. Our trail takes us through the woods
and up to over 600ft to the 'Torre de Meca' so called by the arabs for its
amazing views south & east towards the North African coastline clearly
visible on a good day. From this point we ride back through the forest and
then across a plain studded with wild olives to the ranch.
Day 4 Canyoning - A full day experience and very challenging. Get a good
nights sleep! The days itinerary includes a wonderful drive through south-west
Andalucía with some unforgettable scenery notably the clifftop town
of Arcos de la Frontera & the distant 7,000ft. peaks of the Grazalema
natural park. We will be canyoning in the 'Garganta Verde' a 3km. long limestone
gorge carved out of the mountain by both water & wind erosion. Along
the way there is every chance of seeing both Griffon & Egyptian vultures,
peregrine falcons & if we are lucky Imperial Eagles. There are some challenging
technical sections where we will be abseiling down short rock faces to enter
the gorge, experience not necessary, you are in safe hands with us! This
is a long excursion, expect to get your feet wet at the end of the day...
We will be having dinner en-route home.
Day 5 Free day. Optional activities or just chill out on the beach.
- Horse riding
- Unguided biking
- Visit to Cádiz for shopping & sights
- Visit to Seville for shopping & sights
- Visit North Africa & Tangiers. Visit the souks & sights of
exotic Tangiers
- Diving, Windsurfing, Sailing
Day 6 Mountain Biking in the Las Breñas Nature Park & surrounding
area.
We transfer up to the classic 'white town' of Vejer de la Frontera, declared
an 'Artistic & Historic' National Monument in 1978, this village is one
of the finest examples of Al-Andalus heritage existing. Vejer is maze of
twisting narow streets built for defence purposes at 600ft. above sea level.
On our ride out of town we will see wonderful views over various Nature Parks
and the Atlantic coastline. We journey through rich arable land and visit
the El Pinar Nature Park an area of dense mediterranean pines. After lunch
on El Palmar beach (expect to swim!) we ride through the seaside town of
Conil & past the fishing port & lighthouse of Roche. The riding is
not technical although there are some short hills to negotiate. On the way
back to our Hotel we visit a ‘bodega’ & sample a variety
of local sherrys.
Day 7 Sea kayaking in the Acantilado Marine Nature reserve
Todays itinerary takes us into the Acantilado marina Park near Los Caños.
Accessible only from the water we use unsinkable two man kayaks to paddle
into the coves & secret bays of this sandstone wonderland where huge
rocks poke up out of the water & marine birds nest in the caves. The
itinerary is about 4-5 hours and we will be stopping for a picnic lunch in
a deserted cove along the way. We use a support boat & qualified instructors
to guide & instruct you. If the weather conditions are not adequate we
will transfer into the Alcornocales Nature Reserve & paddle on the Barbate
reservoir surrounded by natural forest. We will visit an abandoned farm & canoe
to a prehistoric settlement & enjoy a picnic in the Naeoltihic caves.
See an ancient burial site too.
