In the middle
ages the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light)
was prey to the plundering of Barbary Pirates
and
Corsairs. This Atlantic coastline is overlooked
by North Africas' Rif mountains, just 8km.
away at their closest point to mainland Europe.
Along
the miles of deserted white sandy beaches
tall conical watchtowers were built to protect
the
inhabitants and valuable stocks of dried
tuna fish. Today the pirates have long gone
but the
watchtowers still stand and tuna fishing
continues as an important part of the local
economy. The
Atlantic sea rolls over fine white sandy
beaches and empty coves.
