After breakfast we travel by private transport
to Seville (approximately two-hours). From
our centrally located hotel we start with a
guided tour of the monuments and sights. Seville
has been an important inland port since the
days of the Islamic occupation. Its real wealth
however, came with the gold and silver plundered
from Spain’s colonies in the New World.
Seville is a low-rise city, and from any point
the dominating tower of the Giralda stands
out. The immense Cathedral is the largest building
of its kind in the world. The recent restoration
of the much of the town centre and many of
the important monuments has only increased
Seville’s reputation as Spain’s
most beautiful city. The narrow cobbled streets
of the Jewish quarter contrast with the wide
avenues and graceful mansion houses of the ‘Avenue
of Palms’. Seville is not just about
great sights and monuments but also about lifestyle
and a different way of living. There are hundreds
of bars and street cafes – and great
shopping too! Hanging hams and matador capes
are all part of the scene. The best value Spanish
goods are shoes and leatherwork, olive oil,
wine and perhaps even a spicy 'chorizo' sausage!
In the evening we can make the most of Seville’s
lively atmosphere by visiting a bar or two
before finishing up at one of the open-air
night spots on the banks of the Guadalquivir
river. Option of flamenco show.
